Requirements To Run
To start, these are the essential rules and steps to launch your candidacy campaign successfully. To make a real impact, consider additional tools and efforts beyond the basics.
The basics
You must be a Canadian citizen, 18 or older, pass a criminal record check and credit score review, and submit a completed Candidate Nomination Application to qualify as a candidate per Elections Canada and party rules.
community support
Election Canada sets lower thresholds, but the party requires signed, verifiable letters of support from at least 200 electors in your riding to demonstrate community backing and commitment to your candidacy success
team
At minimum, you need two key team members: an official agent to manage finances and compliance, plus an auditor (CPA) to ensure accurate reporting, as required by party rules and Elections Canada regulations
funds
You must contribute a total of at least $6,750 per party requirements: $5,000 goes to your campaign funds, and $1,750 goes to the party. You can also contribute $1,750 to other candidates or party entities, and if there’s a nomination contest, you can add $1,000 to that campaign. Note that Elections Canada rules set these as maximums, not minimums; the minimum is a party-specific criterion.
